Walter Shimchick

Biography

Walter Shimchick graduated from Connecticut Teachers' College and moved to Milford, where he began a 37 year career teaching and coaching swimming and track. With no pool in Milford, swim practice for Milford High required a trip to the YWCA in Bridgeport. His teams were always highly competitive. Because of his success, female swimmers wanted a team of their own, and Shimchick was a pioneer in creating and coaching a girls' swim team. He was instrumental in ensuring a pool was included at Foran High School and was very involved with the design and layout of the facility. He transferred to the new high school when it opened in 1973 and taught woodworking and photography until his retirement in 1991.
